Class Plan for MC 1-5
MC 1-3 represents the first of a 6-day lesson plan, introducing the first two rows of common expressions using prepositions and adverbs found on the handout HO 4.
MC 1-4 shows what can be done on Day 2, going over the homework and the previously presented expressions, and continuing on with the next two rows.
MC 1-5 (this lesson plan) highlights what is done on Days 3 to 6. The general procedure is the same, but the handouts for speaking and homework differ. Below is a description of that procedure, but if there are some doubts, one can refer back to MC 1-4 for more details on how going over the previously presented expressions might be approached, for example.

PART C: SPEAKING
C | 1 STEP | SPEAKING PREPOSITIONS
a) | Put the students into groups of 2 or 3.
b) | Tell them to try to include at least two of the new expressions each while speaking. (It’s okay if they say one that was already used by another student.)
c) | Give them one (or both) of the themes for the appropriate group of HO5 (on the board or a slip of paper) and five to ten minutes of speaking time.
d) | Monitor the groups and give them feedback on their pronunciation and appropriate use of the expressions (as well as other elements of the language) while they’re speaking and at the end of the activity. |
PART D: REINFORCEMENT
D | STEP 1 | DEFINITIONS (OPTIONAL QUIZ) PREPOSITIONS
a) | After completing Parts A to C, focus on other themes in class (a listening or reading a text in the coursebook, for example) and return to this part (Part D) later. You want the students to reinforce their memories while the access to the recently learned information is fairly fresh, but has some interference (they have been concentrating on other matters for a while). It could be saved as a closing activity in the last 5 or 10 minutes of the class.
b) | Verbally, projected onto the screen or in the form of handouts (ex: HO 6C), provide the students with the definitions / synonyms and elicit the expressions.
c) | Prompt them with clues for any items defying memory and make sure all 6 expressions are gone over.
d) | If you’re using HO 6C (for example) and the students have already filled in the expressions to the left of the definitions, tell them to cover everything but the blank box to the right of Group C rows 5 & 6. Ask them to write the same six expressions from memory. When they’re done, they can check below.
e) | As a final close to the theme, say each of the items using a natural form of expression in your voice and have the students repeat, mimicking those intonation patterns. |
D | STEP 2 | HOMEWORK PREPOSITIONS
a) | Give the students HO 7 (HO 7C or whichever one is relevant for that class) and tell them to complete the sentences for homework by putting the correct expression into the appropriate box below those sentences. |
For a listing of handouts for homework (HO 7C, 7D, 7E & 7F) see Part A above.
