What’s There in Appetizers          APP 2 – Cardinal Numbers

A quick introduction to what is available

There is a lot of info on this site and until one is familiar with finding and understanding what is available, it wouldn’t hurt to have a brief orientation to each theme.  In this ‘What’s There’, you can find

— what the theme (Cardinal Numbers) is about
— a brief summary of what is to be done, generally speaking, in each lesson
— a listing of the handouts that can accompany the lesson plan

For more detailed explanations of what is being suggested, you can check out the lesson plans themselves.

APP 2     Cardinal Numbers

Students learn how to say cardinal numbers and clear up some doubts surrounding their use

Of the four lesson plans presented for this theme, the first three are dedicated to very low levels, introducing the numbers 1 – 100 and some ways to practice them.
APP2-1   —Students remember, spell, pronounce and practice the use of numbers 1 – 10
APP2-2   —Students remember, spell, pronounce and practice the use of numbers 0 – 20
APP2-3   —Students remember, spell, pronounce and practice the use of numbers 1 – 100
—————-Students learn and play the card game of 99
The last class plan can be a continuation for the same students, or used separately for higher levels that have forgotten or are not clear in the use of numbers.
APP2-4   —Students learn the numbers 1 – 999,999,999 and some of the extra details (for example the use of ‘and’, ‘s’ and commas)

First class (APP 2-1)
—      Students learn the numbers 1 – 10 orally
HO1  Speaking in pairs, one points to a number, the other says it
HO2  Students match the written form to the number in HO 1
—      Other activities are offered for students to practice the numbers

Second class (APP 2-2)
HO1  Students review numbers 1 – 10
HO3  Students write out the words onto the new general reference sheet
—      Students are introduced to spelling and pronunciation of ‘0’ and numbers 11 – 20
HO4  Students in pairs randomly point to numbers, eliciting recognition and pronunciation

Third class (APP 2-3)
HO4  Students review numbers 0 – 20
HO3  Students complete general reference sheet for numbers 1 – 100
HO5  Students in pairs randomly point to numbers, eliciting recognition and pronunciation
HO6  Students learn rules for card game of ‘99’ and associated vocabulary
HO7  Students play the game, using the numbers and referring to the handout

Fourth class (APP 2-4)
HO8  Check students’ ability to say numbers 1 – 999  or for higher level students, numbers 1 – 999,999,999
HO8  Students practice in pairs, one showing a particular sequence of numbers, the other saying it
—      Some pointers are given about what to emphasize in today’s or in future classes

It’s a good idea to reinforce their practice further, repeating some activities or getting the students to use numbers in their speaking from time to time.  Handout 8 is very useful for a quick review done in pairs on occasion.  And, as always, if there is a particular lesson plan you wish to look at more closely you can select it in the Lessons page directly below the theme title by clicking ‘Visit’.
